High Density Polyethylene (HDPE) (2018 Program)

The process technologies and production economics for high density polyethylene (HDPE) are presented.  Ziegler slurry, slurry loop, gas phase, and solution processes from all major technology holders are reviewed.  Cost of production estimates have been developed on a USGC, China, and Middle East basis.  Demand by end use, capacity, and supply/demand/trade data is provided on a global and tri-regional basis.

Biorenewable Insights: Polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA) (2017 Program)

The purpose of this study is to analyze developments in polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs) as a replacement for conventional petrochemical polymers.  The report examines the technical, commercial, and economic aspects of producing PHAs, and their relative costs by region against conventional LDPE.

Biorenewable Insights: Polyamides (2017 Program)

The purpose of this report is to analyze technology developments that lead to the bio-based monomer production used in the manufacture of polyamides.  Bio-renewable sources such as castor oil, palm kernel oil, starch, sugar, and tallow are currently being developed for the production of bio-monomers.  The purpose of this study is to assess the technical, commercial, and economic aspects of producing several bio-monomers.

Biorenewable Insights: Lignin (2017 Program)

The purpose of this report is to analyze developments in lignin based-chemical technology. Lignin derived from biomass can be converted into a number of chemical products, most notably carbon fiber and phenolic resins—with potential to improve the GHG footprint.  The purpose of this study is to assess the technical, commercial, and economic aspects of producing lignin-based products.

Coal to Olefins Processes (2017 Program)

The coal to olefins value chain consists of multiple steps starting with coal gasification followed by methanol synthesis and then by conversion of methanol to olefins.  This report discusses the major technologies associated with each of these steps and presents production economics for coal-based olefins with comparisons to gas- and oil-based technologies.  Global and regional supply, demand, and trade for ethylene and propylene are also presented.
