Whitepaper: Solar-Wind Hybrid Model for an Island Utility

Solar-Wind Hybrid Model

Planning and providing electricity for an island is a challenge. Islands do not have a large transmission grid with multiple nodes connected to various types of power generators that can provide system reliability and resiliency. On the mainland, system planning is done with multiple base load plants and a few peaking units to meet occasional peak load. Many of these large base load plants have cycling or load following capabilities to meet the variation in load demand.

Typically they are also under automatic generation control for adjusting the power output of multiple generators at different power plants in response to changes in the load.
