Cost of Production Model Handbook: Petrochemicals, Polymers, C1 Chemicals and Fertilizers - 2025

This report presents the methodology and assumptions used to generate the archetype cost of production models, supporting the analysis included in the QBA reports, which are published at the end of each quarter through the year.  Over 600 models are available to download from the NexantECA client portal.   This report is specifically geared to provision of technological and cost data, defining the configuration of all archetype plant cost models.  Although archetype plants are not modelled directly on any specific production asset, the capacity and process consumption factors of plant models are reviewed, to ensure they reflect the spread demonstrated by actual operating units.  The cost of production models presented in this report display the current plant capacity, yield patterns, and utility consumption factors for the models used in the 2025 QBA Program.

Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET) Depolymerization (2025 Program)

This report discusses depolymerization as an advanced alternative to mechanical recycling for PET. Depolymerization technologies chemically break down PET into its monomers, enabling closed loop recycling and overcoming the quality limitations of mechanical methods. The report reviews key pathways such as glycolysis, methanolysis, and hydrolysis, outlining their process considerations, maturity, and feedstock applications. It highlights the cost-competitiveness and carbon intensity metrics these routes face, and presents global PET depolymerization capacity. Regional policy drivers are discussed to show how market pressures and infrastructure constraints shape the viability of depolymerization.

Sodium Ion Batteries (2025 Program)

Battery technologies are central to the global energy transition, enabling the shift away from fossil fuels, protecting energy security, enabling cleaner power systems and electrified transport. The most widely employed battery type currently is based on lithium ion (Li-ion) technology, with advantages including high energy density, long life cycle and rapidly declining cost. However, rapid growth in renewable energy and electric vehicle markets has resulted in unsustainable demand for key battery minerals including lithium. Sodium ion (Na-ion) batteries have been identified as a potential alternative to Li-ion technologies due to the abundance and low cost of sodium feedstocks. Currently the Na-ion battery market is at a critical commercial inflection point, rapidly transitioning from pilot-scale initiatives to mass production and widespread commercial application.
