Plastic Pyrolysis (2025 Program)

This report discusses an alternative to mechanical recycling that allows for the processing of mixed plastics. Plastic pyrolysis is a thermochemical process that decomposes mixed plastic waste to produce pyrolysis oil, a potential feedstock for aromatics extraction, fluid catalytic cracking, and steam cracking to produce fuels and chemicals. Plastic pyrolysis technologies and the impact of different types of plastics feedstocks on process considerations and performance are covered in this report. Process economics for producing plastic pyrolysis oil and upgrading and utilization in a steam cracker are provided as well as a carbon intensity analysis.

Biorenewable Insights: Polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA) (2025 Program)

Polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA), a class of naturally-occurring polyesters, are promising candidates for replacing petrochemical plastics in select applications due to their biodegradability and other desirables properties. This report outlines the production processes for PHA, evaluates the companies that own these technologies (project scoring), and provides cost estimates for plant construction and production. Additionally, the report explores carbon credits and implications for PHA adoption in various sectors including food packaging, consumer products, and medical supplies.

ABS/SAN Resins (2025 Program)

ABS is produced by the mass (or bulk) or emulsion/mass hybrid polymerization of three monomers: acrylonitrile, butadiene, and styrene. Additionally, pre-polymerized materials can be compounded together to produce ABS. This technoeconomic report describes these current process routes to ABS as well as the historic emulsion process and new technology developments. Production economics for world-scale mass, hybrid, emulsion, and compounding routes to produce ABS are presented for the United States, Western Europe, and Coastal China. A global capacity list is also provided.

Crude Oil-to-Chemicals (2025 Program)

This report discusses various crude oil-to-chemical (COTC) plant configurations that focus on high yields of light olefins, or aromatics, or the full range of petrochemical products while minimizing the production of traditional refinery fuels. Technologies for processing heavy crude fractions and residue streams are highlighted along with traditional petrochemical processing technologies. Process economics for various COTC configurations are provided, as are case studies to illustrate COTC configurations in operation or under consideration today.

Thermoplastic Liquid Crystal Polymers (2025 Program)

We normally think of three states of matter: solid, liquid, and gaseous; and three phases: crystalline, melt, and gas. Liquid crystals are sometimes referred to as a fourth state of matter, lying between a three-dimensional rigid crystalline structure and an isotropic liquid. This report covers thermotropic liquid crystal polymers (LCP), their chemistry, manufacturing process, production economics, and applications.

Purified Terephthalic Acid (PTA) (2025 Program)

This report discusses the process technologies for purified terephthalic acid (PTA), which is primarily used to produce polyethylene terephthalate (PET) via esterification with ethylene glycol followed by melt-phase polycondensation. PTA is commercially produced by the oxidation of para-xylene with air followed by purification and recovery/recycle of catalysts and solvents. Production economics for the United States, Middle East, and China under a consistent first quarter 2025 price scenario are also presented.
