Linear Alpha Olefins (2015 Program)

The chemistry, process technology, and production economics for alpha olefins are assessed. Comparative economics are presented for full-range technologies (Axens, Chevron Phillips, Ineos, Shell, SABIC/Linde), upgrade of by-product streams (Zeon, Sasol) and on-purpose production of butene-1 (Axens), hexene-1 (Axens, Chevron Phillips, Lummus) and octene-1 (Dow, Sasol). A regional market overview is also included.

Biorenewable Insights: Alpha Olefins and LAOs (2015 Program)

The purpose of this report is to analyze developments in bio-based alpha olefin and LAO (linear alpha olefin) technology. LAOs derived from bio-based sources can be converted into a number of chemical products - with potential to improve the GHG footprint of the process.  The purpose of this study is to assess the technical, commercial, and economic aspects of producing LAOs via bio-based sources, and to investigate future capacities.

Developments in LAO Comonomer Technologies for Polyethylene (2012 Program)

Linear alpha olefin (LAO) comonomer technologies for polyethylene have been reviewed. Regional process economics for the production of full-range LAO and on-purpose butene-1, hexene-1, and octene-1 have been evaluated. Regional supply/demand for alpha olefins (butene-1, hexene-1, octene-1) is included.

Lube Oil (2012 Program)

Commercial lubricant base oil production technologies (traditional refining, hydroprocessing, gas-to-liquids (GTL), and poly-alpha-olefin (PAO)) and developing biotechnologies have been reviewed. Process economics have been developed in the context of increasingly favorable natural gas prices and more stringent environmental regulations. Regional supply/demand balance for lube oils are included.

Alpha Olefins (2008 Program)

The chemistry, process technology, and production economics for alpha olefins are assessed. Processes include full-range (Chevron Phillips, Ineos, Shell, SABIC/Linde, Axens, UOP) and on-purpose butene-1 (Nippon Zeon, Axens), hexene-1 (Chevron Phillips, Sasol, Lummus) and octene-1 (Dow, Sasol). A regional market overview is also included.

On-Purpose Octene-1 (2007 Program)

New and emerging process technologies for manufacturing octene-1 “on-purpose” are described and their economics compared. In addition to Sasol’s current octene-1 extraction process, Sasol’s developing heptene-1 based route and ethylene tetramerization process are examined. Dow’s developing butadiene telomerization approach is also investigated. Regional octene-1 supply/demand forecasts are provided as well.
